Prescribing Controlled Dangerous Substances
This six-hour course addressing the key concepts required to safely prescribe controlled substances meets the requirements for Advanced Practice Nurses (ANP) to be licensed to prescribe Controlled Substances in NJ. Topics discussed include: the pharmacologic properties of various controlled drug substances, indications and considerations for safe utilization, prevention and management of addictions, prevention and management of impaired practice among health professionals, and the current New Jersey State licensure requirements related to prescribing controlled drug substances.
Target Audience
Nurse practitioners and nurse practitioner students planning to practice in New Jersey.
Learning Outcome
At the completion of this course participants will have increased their knowledge about prescribing controlled substances following federal and New Jersey state mandates.
Objectives
At the completion of this course, participants will be able to:
- Review the current New Jersey state requirements for APNs prescribing Controlled Dangerous Substances (CDS).
- Discuss current opioid epidemic in the United States and what has been done to try to manage the problem at both the state and national level.
- Review of DEA classifications and pharmacologic properties of select drugs.
- Identify tools for substance abuse screening and review the requirements and referral procedure for healthcare providers who may be abusing CDS.
- Provide best-practice information for use of CDS Agreement forms, prescribing naltrexone for opioid overdose, and implementation of urine drug testing.
