M.S.A.T. Program Details
About Us
The Master of Science in Athletic Training degree program prepares students to provide care to become health care professionals who collaborate with physicians in prevention, emergency care, clinical diagnosis, therapeutic intervention and rehabilitation of injuries and illnesses.
Athletic trainers (ATs) are health care professionals who collaborate with physicians in prevention, emergency care, clinical diagnosis, therapeutic intervention and rehabilitation of injuries and illnesses.
By using an evidence-based practice model - which features a unique combination of clinical expertise, the best evidence available and patient values - we are preparing our students to be the next generation of leaders in the care of patients and athletes worldwide. We teach what's current and supported by the latest research, so that by the time they graduate, our students have mastered the following domains of practice, as mandated by our Board of Certification:
- Injury/illness prevention and wellness protection
- Clinical evaluation and diagnosis
- Immediate and emergency care
- Treatment and rehabilitation
- Organizational and professional health and well-being
Our Values
Athletic trainers don't just treat an injury. They treat a whole person, often over the course of his or her entire tenure with a team, school or career. Through interdisciplinary education, evidence-based practice, hands-on clinical experiences, intensive research and the theories presented in our coursework, we teach our students how to focus on the unique needs of each patient.
Our Experience
- A unique combination of formal classroom instruction and clinical experiences
- Two-year, 64-credit full-time program
- B.S./B.A. and M.S.A.T. dual-degree options available in cooperation with the College of Arts and Sciences
- Distinctive courses, such as Orthopedic Clinical Medicine and Imaging and Targeted Applications of Treatment in the Spine, are taught by University faculty and clinicians who have practical experience in the profession
- Clinical experiences begin in the first semester of the program.
- Students work side-by-side with faculty on clinical research projects that are presented at national and local conferences.
Our Advantage
Clinical Experiences: Seton Hall M.S.A.T. students begin their clinical rotations in the first semester of the program, gaining practical experience right away in a variety of settings. From local high schools, to our own NCAA Division 1 sports teams, to professional sports franchises in neighboring metropolitan areas, our students integrate their classroom knowledge with hands-on clinical education in a number of dynamic and fast-paced environments.
Interdisciplinary Approach: As part of the School of Health and Medical Sciences at Seton Hall, our athletic training students receive an interprofessional approach to their practice. By working alongside and learning from accomplished occupational therapists, physical therapists and other medical practitioners in leading healthcare fields, our students receive a holistic view of how to treat and care for the patients and athletes they serve.
Employment Edge: Upcoming changes to the AT profession will require new practitioners to have a master's degree. Seton Hall University offers the state's first entry-level Master of Science in Athletic Training degree program that is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Athletic Training Education. Practitioners with an M.S.A.T. can command higher salaries than those with only a bachelor's degree in the field, and have increased employment prospects.
