Hitting a Home Run With Data: A Look Back at Seton Hall University's Baseball Analytics Pre-College Program

Seton Hall University recently concluded the Baseball Analytics Pre-college program, where high school students stepped into a field where data meets home runs. This dynamic course, led by John Saccoman, Ph.D., professor of Mathematics and Computer Science, framed the vital topic of data and analytics in the context of sports, specifically baseball. Participants built real-time data models and learned evaluative analytics, transforming numbers into strategic game-changers on the field.

Throughout the experience, students explored the intersection of data science and America’s favorite pastime. The course delved into the real-world techniques that have reshaped the game, offering a comprehensive understanding of how analytics influence player performance, drafting and in-game decision-making.

Using data modeling tools and software, students built real-time data models to analyze player statistics and game outcomes. They learned to interpret player performance metrics and apply predictive analytics to make informed decisions. This hands-on approach equipped participants with the skills to navigate the complex and data-driven world of modern baseball.

The program emphasized practical application, with students working on real-time data projects that mirrored the tasks of professional baseball analysts. They examined player statistics, created models, and learned how to utilize data to enhance strategic decision-making on the field. This experience not only deepened their understanding of baseball analytics but also provided valuable insights into the broader field of data science.

Reflecting on the launch of this new summer pre-college program, Professor Saccoman remarked, "Our goal was to show students the power of data in transforming sports, and they now have a solid foundation in both data science and baseball analytics." Students had the added bonus of using Saccoman’s co-authored book Practicing Sabermetrics as part of the course experience.

Jonathan Farina, Ph.D., interim dean of the College of Arts and Sciences praised the program, stating, "This interdisciplinary course embodies our commitment to education that is purposeful, practical and also joyful. By merging data and computer science with sports analytics, we provide students opportunities to explore how data science can revolutionize various fields, including athletics. The course helps students excel in math, statistics and computers — in college and beyond — but, more still, the course teaches them how to have fun learning."

A high school student participant shared their enthusiasm, saying, "I’ve always loved baseball, and this program opened my eyes to a whole new aspect of the game. Learning how data can impact player performance and game strategy was fascinating, and I can use the skills in other ways as well."
