International Peace Day
Tuesday, September 22, 2020
September 21st marked a world-wide observance of the International Day of Peace that was established in 1981 by the UN General Assembly. In 2001, it was unanimously designated a day of non-violence. It is the initiative of the General Assembly to mark international days as special occasions to highlight global issues and important aspects of human life (For more information click here). International days are great opportunities to express creativity, share thoughts and strengthen local communities with diverse events related to a particular issue of concern.
The World's International Peace Day is mostly focused on peace education, which is known as the key preventive means to reduce war sustainably. This day recognizes differences in culture and promotes the ideas of non-violence, peacebuilding and peacekeeping. Every year on this day the United Nations appeals to all the people and states to put down weapons and remember that everybody can live in harmony.
In 2020, the International Peace Day theme is "Shaping Peace Together", which strives to remind people that our common enemy is the Coronavirus, and we must unite against the impact of this global pandemic. 2020 has been a year of struggles and challenges due to the deadly virus spread. Renewed focus on racism and discrimination has spotlighted brutality around the globe. Our world needs kind and compassionate hearts more than ever right now.
