About the Department
The Department of Educational Studies is renowned for its exemplary programs, knowledgeable and supportive faculty, multiple field placements, and opportunities for observation and teaching in a variety of settings. Our undergraduate teacher preparation programs culminate in a Bachelor of Science in Education degree and one or more teacher certifications for our candidates.
The elementary and special education program prepares candidates for dual certification in both elementary and special education in four years – a key differentiator for graduates. This is supplemented by additional certifications, including early childhood (P-3), K-12, and/or middle school (6-8) in a particular content area, depending on students’ choice of second major. New Jersey law requires subject area specialization; therefore, all education candidates have a second major in a content area.
The secondary education program prepares candidates to teach their subject area specialization: math, biology, history, English, art, or a world language. Secondary teacher candidates can also add special education courses, leading to an additional certification within the four years.
Our programs offer interactive courses that link theory to practice with several diverse, supervised, field placements in sophomore and junior year prior to student teaching. Our teacher candidates learn in their courses and through their experiences with students in classrooms and the professionals who mentor them. Faculty and school partners prepare candidates to teach using best practices in a variety of settings, grades, and communities.
At the graduate level, the department has programs in initial teaching certification, professional development for educators, instructional technology, and library media specialist. The Department’s School Library Media and Instructional Design programs have been awarded national recognition by the Association for Educational Communications and Technology (AECT).
The programs within Educational Studies, along with other educational leadership programs in the college and across the university, have been nationally accredited by Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation (CAEP) and follow NJ state guidelines and policies.
In addition, several of our programs, and the related subject areas, have been nationally recognized by the following professional associations:

Students are grounded firmly in their chosen discipline, with access to a robust, cross-disciplinary curriculum and real-world collaborations that connect education with communication, design, art, and media to create change. This dynamic approach sets our students apart – equipping them to lead in a variety of fields and solve pressing problems in their communities and beyond.
