SHMS Named Recipient of a National Interprofessional Education (IPE) Achievement Award

"I thank the members of the SHMS Faculty Advisory Board (FAB), the SHMS faculty, our colleagues in the College of Nursing who have collaborated with us in our IPE mission, our external partner--the Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) Program in School of Pharmacy and Health Sciences at Fairleigh Dickinson University, and most of all, the students who have benefitted from the various IPE experiences afforded them both at the School level via our Core IPE Signature Experiences, our Online IPE Modules, as well as the many IPE initiatives conducted within and across our individual departments and programs."
ASAHP, the well-established national professional organization concerned with critical issues affecting the health professions education, is comprised of over 100 academic institutions and four professional associations and is dedicated to addressing the educational needs of the health professions and providing support in the practice of health services in the U.S. The association awards member institutions as well as industry members who demonstrate outstanding achievement in both interprofessional collaborative practice (IPCP) and interprofessional education (IPE) through its initiatives and educational practices.
Award Criteria:
Candidates for this award must be ASAHP members and should demonstrate outstanding achievement in the following areas:
- Initiatives are inclusive and comprehensive in scope in the preparation of collaboration-ready health professionals.
- Initiatives are strongly committed to assessment of outcomes and dissemination of scholarship.
- Initiatives are strongly connected to their Institution’s mission and culture.
- Initiatives are connected to external stakeholders in the community.
- Initiatives promote personal, community and population health.
- Initiatives advocate for social justice and address social determinants of health.

SHMS’ IPE Model and Academic Center
Awarded, SHMS has designed an innovative continuum of IPE experiences that develop the skillsets needed for effective communication and teaming across healthcare professions. As an institution of higher education that prepares students to engage in person-centered interprofessional practice (IPP), SHMS has created sustainable, nationally recognized experiential learning opportunities that foster individual student development of quantitative and qualitative skills necessary for effective collaboration among healthcare providers to ensure the highest quality of person-centered care. This journey began eight years ago and has evolved into a landmark IPE strategy for other universities in the United States and abroad.
To meet this goal, the Dean of SHMS established its Center for Interprofessional Education in the Health Sciences (CIEHS) to generate opportunities for cross-disciplinary educational, research and clinical experiences in an effort advance the SHMS' team-based, person-centered approach to healthcare.
Mission
The Center’s mission is to provide students and faculty with transformative interprofessional learning experiences that support the development of critical thinking skills needed for person-centered practice; foster an interprofessional dialogue surrounding contemporary issues in IPP and IPE; contribute to the scholarly development of and dissemination of knowledge regarding IPP and IPE at appropriate local, regional, national and international conferences; and cultivate the professional growth and development of faculty (academic, affiliate and clinical), graduate students, fellows, alumni and affiliated healthcare professionals of the School of Health and Medical Sciences at Seton Hall University.
Vision
The Center’s vision is to support and provide a critically reflective and engaging environment for students, faculty, clinical partners, and other stakeholders to acquire and develop knowledge and familiarity with cross-disciplinary skills, behaviors, and perspectives. Guided by adult learning theory, the Center employs structured immersion experiences to promote a culture of professional discourse and reflection essential to attain a cohesive, collaborative person-centered plan of care. Development of the often-overlooked professional soft skills in students, faculty and clinical partners that augment individual professional growth and lifelong learning is paramount throughout the Center’s continuum of interprofessional learning experiences. By design, the Center prepares students to meet the needs and demands of interprofessional practice and establishes the School and the Center as innovators in interprofessional education.
IPE Core Signature Experiences (CSEs)
The CSEs were constructed with the overall goal of developing healthcare professionals who foster and support the person-centered, evidence- and team-based model of care by assisting students in recognizing the interdependence that exists among and between all healthcare providers and the unique perspectives and contributions that each discipline can provide to achieve appropriate individual health outcomes. Collectively, the CSEs promote professionalism, empathy, advocacy, roles and responsibilities, person-centered care, community and population health with a strong emphasis on aspects of social justice and addressing social determinants of health. SHMS students and faculty from the departments of Athletic Training, Physical Therapy, Physician Assistant, Occupational Therapy, and Speech-Language Pathology primarily participate in the CSEs. Over the past year, participation was expanded to include students from the SHMS Master of Healthcare Administration program, Seton Hall’s College of Nursing, College of Education and Human Services, and an external academic partner, Fairleigh Dickinson University’s School of Pharmacy.
Asynchronous Online Learning Modules
The second phase of the Center’s IPE initiative focused on the development of a core IPE curriculum consisting of four Asynchronous Online Learning Modules. The four interprofessional modules were created by the Center’s IPE- faculty advisory board (FAB) and use a team- and problem-based, self-directed learning approach to explore more in-depth health concepts impacting today’s healthcare delivery system. Each module has approximately 300 students divided into 30 interprofessional sections of 10 students per section. Each module is facilitated by a faculty facilitator who acts as section guide for the learning teams. By design, as a method of establishing richer team experiences, each section retains their group makeup over the two-year period in which the students engage in all four online learning modules.
The overall intent of the module learning experience is that it provides an ongoing medium for interprofessional engagement via diverse and innovative online asynchronous models of teaching and learning. Each online learning module utilizes teaching with technology differently, thus providing students exposure to an array of teaching and learning strategies. The modules have been designed to supplement material offered by SHMS’ academic programs and provide experiential interprofessional team-based learning opportunities. The overarching goal for the modules is to create student experiential learning opportunities that foster individual development of quantitative and qualitative skills necessary for effective collaboration among healthcare providers to ensure the highest quality of person-centered care.

IHS Campus
Both the School of Health and Medical Sciences and the Center for Interprofessional Education in Health Sciences are housed on the Interprofessional Health Sciences Campus which supports an innovative approach to healthcare education by uniting practitioners across disciplines. This approach to healthcare education promotes cooperation and communication through team-based interactions, ultimately leading to bolstered patient care.
