Michael Reuter

Michael Reuter, Director Emeritus, Buccino Leadership Institute

For three decades, the Buccino Leadership Institute (the Institute) has stood as a cornerstone of Seton Hall University’s commitment to forming principled, purpose-driven leaders. On October 3, the Institute commemorated 30 years of vision, service and leadership excellence, a celebration of a living legacy that continues to inspire excellence across generations.

The event brought together University President Monsignor Joseph Reilly; Interim Provost Erik Lillquist; members of the Board of Regents; faculty and administrators; Buccino alumni and Scholars now serving in leadership positions across industries; Advisory Council members and the Institute’s current student ambassadors, who embody the next generation of servant leaders.

Throughout the evening, screens illuminated milestones from the Institute’s history, from its first graduating class in 1999 to the present day, showcasing a community built on collaboration, resilience and transformation. President Reilly joined Mary Kate Naatus, Ph.D., associate provost and dean of the Division of Continuing Education and Professional Studies, and Andrew Simon, Ph.D., interim executive director of the Buccino Leadership Institute, in honoring four visionary leaders whose dedication shaped the Institute’s remarkable journey.

The evening’s honorees were:

  • John H. Shannon, whose foresight in 1994 planted the program’s first seed;
  • Karen E. Boroff, who expanded that vision across the University;
  • Michael M. Reuter, whose leadership accelerated growth and national recognition;
  • Gerald P. Buccino, whose generosity established the Institute that proudly bears his name.

Reflecting on the milestone, Gerald P. Buccino shared, “It’s amazing that 30 years have gone by so quickly. The turnout of Buccino Scholars and alumni from across the country truly affirmed the program’s impact and success.” He added, “Seton Hall’s commitment to leadership education was evident throughout the celebration, and with Dr. Simon’s leadership, the Institute is poised for continued growth and excellence.

University President Monsignor Joseph Reilly emphasized the Institute’s central place in Seton Hall’s mission, noting, “The Buccino Leadership Institute stands as one of the most distinctive leadership programs in the nation. It embodies our Catholic mission to form servant leaders who will transform their professions and their communities.”

Andrew Simon shared an inspiring outlook for the future, one that includes expanded opportunities for executive education, cross-disciplinary collaboration, and continued national distinction. In his reflection, Michael Reuter reminded all in attendance that the lessons learned within the Institute are “seeds to be carried forward, to take root in new lives, new hearts, new generations.”

The celebration also highlighted the Institute’s vibrant community of current student leaders. Buccino Ambassadors from across Seton Hall’s colleges attended the event, engaging with alumni, trustees and faculty.

Isabella Barbarino reflected, “We had the privilege to see what true leadership looks like as the Institute honored its four founders who shaped what the Buccino Leadership Institute is today.”

Sarah Hart, lead coordinator of volunteer student ambassadors, added, “The 30th Anniversary was a thrilling and memorable success. It was incredible to see generations of Buccino leaders come together to celebrate the Institute’s tangible impact.”

As the Institute looks to the future, gratitude remains at the heart of its mission. The Buccino Leadership Institute extends sincere thanks to every individual who has contributed to its success over three decades, faculty mentors, staff, leadership coaches, benefactors, advisory council members and especially our remarkable alumni who continue to lead and serve with distinction. The Institute invites all alumni, whether they attended the celebration or not, to stay connected, share ideas, and continue shaping the next chapter of leadership at Seton Hall.

Above all, the Buccino Leadership Institute remains dedicated to its students, the heart of the program, who will carry forward this proud legacy of leadership, service, and integrity to make their own lasting impact on the world.
