Award-Winning Journalist to Speak at Seton Hall  

Seton Hall University's Edwin R. Lewinson Center for the Study of Labor, Inequality, and Social Justice welcomes the award-winning author Alissa Quart to campus Thursday, April 4th at 5 p.m. in Jubilee Auditorium.

While the work of Alissa Quart spans a diverse array of genres and disciplines, from poetry to journalism to executive leadership, she has retained a singular focus on uncovering and exploring hidden inequalities in American society. Her recent book Squeezed: Why Our Families Can't Afford America offers a bracing look at the lives of the middle class—that large and increasingly imperiled swath of people who have faced increasing economic hardships in childcare, education, working environments, and medicine. The book, one of Time's "Best New Books to Read this Summer," has found resounding critical and popular success. Ms. Quart has written three other books, including Branded: The Buying and Selling of Teenagers and Republic of Outsiders: The Power of Amateurs, Dreamers, and Rebels, and is the executive director of the Economic Hardship Reporting Project, which commissions journalism with the aim of "changing the national conversation around poverty and economic insecurity." In addition to her nonfiction, she has published poetry in esteemed outlets such as The London Review of Books and The Nation. Ms. Quart won the 2018 Columbia Journalism School Alumna Award and the 2017 L.A. Press Club Award for Commentary.
