Philosophers Speak: Iakovos Vasiliou, Ph.D., on Socratic Deliberation
Tuesday, September 27, 2022
Dr. Iakovos Vasiliou, Ph.D.
On Tuesday, October 18, 2022, from 5:30-7:00 p.m. in the Schwartz (Nursing) Amphitheater, the Philosophy Department and the Dean's Office of the College of Arts and Sciences will present the next installment of the Philosophers Speak lecture series. The lecture will be delivered by Iakovos Vasiliou, Ph.D., Professor of Philosophy at The Graduate Center, City University of New York.
Vasiliou's talk is entitled, "Socratic Deliberation in the Apology and Crito." He will explore the interesting question of how Socrates makes decisions in the here and now, despite disavowing knowledge of virtue. He will introduce a distinction between 'aiming deliberation' and 'determining deliberation,' and discuss the idea of 'the supremacy of virtue.'
Vasiliou’s research focuses on ancient philosophy, moral psychology, philosophy of perception, and philosophy of mind. He is the editor of Moral Motivation, published by Oxford University Press in 2016, and the author of Aiming at Virtue in Plato, published by Cambridge University Press in 2008.
Each year, the Department of Philosophy hosts the Philosophers Speak lecture series, in which a major philosopher is invited to present a university-wide talk on current or social issues. A number of influential figures have given the talks in recent years, and the series most recently featured Michael Cholbi, Ph.D., Professor of Philosophy at the University of Edinburgh and Tara Smith, Ph.D., Professor of Philosophy at the University of Texas at Austin.
