Serene Khader, Ph.D.
On Thursday, April 20th, 2023, from 5-6:30 p.m. in Schwartz 113, the Philosophy Department and the Dean’s Office of the College of Arts and Sciences will present the next installment of the Philosophers Speak lecture series. The lecture will be delivered by Serene Khader, Ph.D., Jay Newman Chair in Philosophy of Culture at Brooklyn College and Professor of Philosophy and Women’s and Gender Studies at The Graduate Center, CUNY.
In this talk, entitled, “The Freedom Myth: The Idea Behind White Feminism, Girlboss Feminism, and Other Feminisms for the Few,” Professor Khader will explore why we should think that feminism’s central concept isn’t freedom, but rather equality.
Professor Khader’s research focuses on ethics, moral psychology, political philosophy, and feminist philosophy. In addition to philosophy, she also works in the interdisciplinary fields of development ethics and decolonial and postcolonial feminisms. Professor Khader is the author of Decolonizing Universalism: A Transnational Feminist Ethic and Adaptive Preferences and Women’s Empowerment, both published by Oxford University Press.
