PSEG Chief Information Security Officer Delivers Lecture on Cybersecurity  

As part of the 2022 Petersheim Academic Exposition, the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science within the College of Arts and Sciences welcomed Gurdeep Kaur, Chief Information Security Officer at PSEG, to deliver its annual Charles Franke Memorial Lecture during the "Mathematics, Computer Science and Data Science Day" event held on Friday, April 29.

Titled "Careers in Cybersecurity," Kaur's virtual lecture engaged attendees by providing an overview of cybersecurity awareness through the standard frameworks adopted in the industry and speaking about career opportunities in the field. The lecture topic focused on her work in the field and the increased demand cybersecurity, which is expected to grow at an annual rate of 31 percent from 2020 to 2029 according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.

In her current role at PSEG, Kaur is responsible for managing enterprise technology cyber risk, and compliance with the cyber requirements of applicable laws and regulations. She provided an overview of multiple functions in cybersecurity, recent trends and what the field offers for budding researchers and graduates.

Attendees were offered the opportunity to learn a foundational understanding of understanding of different types of cyber threats, vulnerabilities and possible mitigation measures. Apart from this, Kaura also provided insights into the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) Cyber Security Framework, which provides direction and guide to organization who want to improve cybersecurity risk management. The framework is widely adopted and can strengthen the security posture and manage the cyber risk for an organization of any size.

In addition, Kaur integrated real-world examples through her discussion, and offered students information and tips on different career paths available in the field, finishing with a question-and-answer session with the audience.

The event was sponsored by the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science, which invites a mathematician or computer science person each to deliver the Charles Franke Memorial lecture named after Charles Franke, Department chair in the 1970s.

Following the lecture, the "Mathematics, Computer Science and Data Science Day" event continued with the Pi Mu Epsilon Honor Society induction ceremony, the John J. Saccoman Graduation Award ceremony, and poster presentations from mathematics, computer science and data science students.
