Tuesday, November 21, 2023
On Wednesday, December 6, 2023, from 5 p.m to 6:30 p.m. in Bethany Hall A-B, the Philosophy Department and the Dean’s Office of the College of Arts and Sciences will present the next speaker in the Philosophers Speak lecture series. This lecture brings to campus Professor Sam Scheffler, University Professor of Philosophy at New York University.
In his talk titled, "Existential Catastrophe," he will be discussing his work on why we should worry about future generations and catastrophe. This work concerns the relationship between the meaning in our lives and the existence of future generations. In so doing, he will discuss the risk that existential catastrophe poses for us on his view compared to that of other approaches.
Professor Scheffler’s research focuses on moral and political philosophy and the theory of value. He is author of Human Morality (Oxford), Equality and Tradition (Oxford), Death and the Afterlife (Oxford), and Why Worry about Future Generations? (Oxford). He is a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and has received both Guggenheim and NEH Fellowships, among numerous other awards.
