Should Kant be Canceled?
Monday, February 28, 2022
Associate Professor Mark Couch recently published an article on Kant and his philosophy. Written for the magazine Philosophy Now, his article "Should Kant Be Canceled?" explores the problem of how to evaluate historical thinkers when they make controversial statements.
Professor Couch considers how we should view historical thinkers in light of any problematic statements they may have made. How should we view these statements? In terms of the personal traits of the authors? In terms of their broader theories? Or something else? Considering these questions helps us to come to a more nuanced and careful approach to these issues.
Philosophy Now is known for its helpful articles on Philosophy. Written for a general audience, it produces material on the leading figures in the field, presenting the range and depth of Philosophy's history. The present article was written to contribute to these discussions and help bring questions of ethics and history together. It is important to continue examining issues of ethics and how they relate to previous times, to learn from those who came before us.
Professor Couch is a member of the Philosophy Department, where he teaches Ethics and other subjects.
