On February 27-28, 2026, Bachelor of Social Work (BSW) students from Seton Hall traveled to Hartford, Connecticut, to attend the 30th annual UConn Campaign School for Social Workers, held at the University of Connecticut School of Law. The two-day workshop brought together aspiring social workers, advocates and leaders from across the country to develop the skills and knowledge essential to engaging more effectively in political and policy practice.
Designed for individuals interested in becoming more politically active as candidates, staff members, nonprofit leaders, volunteers or advocates for social change, the Campaign School offers a dynamic and immersive learning experience, including hands-on workshops, diverse interview panels and much more. Over the course of the weekend, students participated in sessions covering the inner workings of electoral campaigns, strategies for fundraising and building political power, community organizing and mobilizing for meaningful social change.
Shannon Lane, Ph.D., Director of the Nancy A. Humphreys Institute for Political Social Work, opened the program with a compelling discussion on the role of political social work. She emphasized that political engagement is not simply a specialized lens within the profession, but rather an inherent component of all social work practice. This perspective encouraged students to think critically about how policies and political systems shape the work they do and the communities they serve.
Representing Seton Hall were senior BSW students Seraiyah Brown, Khiya Diaz, Raquel Saharig Sava, Simone Taylor, Zorya Morgan, Erick Morey and Breyanna Williams. Throughout the program, they engaged with peers and professionals from across the nation, building connections and gaining practical tools to support their future roles as advocates and changemakers.
Experiences like the Campaign School play a vital role in preparing Seton Hall students to become leaders with purpose, advocate for equity and contribute meaningfully to the advancement of social justice both within the university and beyond. Engaging in policy practice is a required social work competency that is focused on in the BSW program as required by its external accreditors.
