Undergraduate Advising

Full-time faculty and administrators within the College of Human Development, Culture, and Media serve as advisers to support students within the college to enhance the quality of the student experience and plan coursework in alignment with prescribed curricula. 

All students within the College of Human Development, Culture, and Media are required to meet with an academic adviser at least once per semester.  Receiving academic advising is integral to student success and degree completion.  Academic Advising within the College is a partnership between student and adviser. Through this partnership, advisers within the College help students articulate their educational and career goals, understand University policy and procedures, and connect with campus resources to support their transition.  

Preparing for your Advising Appointment:

  1. Review the website, catalogue and degree progress tracker for your program of study review course requirements, number of credits needed, core classes, and prerequisites.
  2. Prepare a list of questions or concerns you might have so you can discuss with your adviser.
  3. When preparing for course registration, be sure to create a list of courses you would like to take in the upcoming semester, review your choices with your adviser.

Students will not be able to register for classes without a registration PIN which is provided as part of the required advising appointment.

  • By actively participating in academic advising, students will:
  • Develop an educational plan that supports their academic goals and supports timely completion of degree in alignment with the program’s four-year plan
  • Correctly interpret the information on the Degree Progress Tracker and apply this information to appropriate course selection and registration
  • Increase self-authorship by taking responsibility for their academic decisions
  • Identify and use resources that support their success
  • Select and participate in co-curricular experiences that are in line with their values, interests, academic and career goals
  • Understand and use technologies effectively (Compass, Degree Progress Tracker, Self-Service Banner, Blackboad, PirateNet)

Students in the College of Human Development, Culture, and Media are assigned to an adviser based on their declared program and concentration or track, if applicable.
