"Is Poland's Democracy in Danger?” - Seton Hall University

On Thursday, March 17th, 2022, in Fahy 236, and via TEAMS, at 6:30-8:30 p.m., the Slavic Club, will be hosting Dr. Richard Hunter's lecture, "Is Poland's Democracy in Danger?"

Poland's democratic institutions took root at the start of its transition from communist rule in 1989. Rapid economic growth and other societal changes have benefited some segments of the population more than others, contributing to a deep divide between liberal, pro-European political parties, and those purporting to defend "national interests" and "traditional" Polish Catholic values. Many would argue that since taking power in late 2015, the populist, socially conservative Law and Justice (PiS) party has enacted numerous measures that increase political influence over state institutions and threaten to reverse Poland's democratic progress. This presentation will highlight many of these concerns.

Dr. Richard Hunter is a Professor of Legal Studies and International Business in the Stillman School. He has written more than 50 peer-reviewed articles on Poland and transition economics and politics, as well as two academic books on these topics. Professor Hunter is a member of the selection committee for the Loyas Scholarship. He has made presentations to the Slavic Club and the Russian and East European Studies Program since February of 2001, each time to a huge and very enthusiastic audiences.
