Integrating AI in the Curriculum
GenAI Literacy
GenAI literacy, or the ability to understand and navigate the world of generative
artificial intelligence, will become increasingly important as AI is further integrated
into various aspects of our academic, professional and personal lives. Just as traditional
literacy empowers individuals to communicate effectively and critically evaluate information,
GenAI literacy empowers students to think critically about the responsible and ethical
use of GenAI tools.
Assignment Ideas to Integrate AI into the Curriculum
When designing assignments, it is essential to communicate your expectations clearly
and emphasize the importance of original work and proper citation. Below are assignment
examples that teach students to interact with AI safely and effectively.
- Speech-to-Text »
Students may wish to use the Dictation tool for Speech-to-Text in Word, PowerPoint,
Outlook and Notebook. This is a feature on the Home tool ribbon of the Microsoft programs.
- Pronunciation Practice »
Explore the Speakable website to create auto-graded speaking assignments in over 100 languages. More information
can be found on Larry Ferlazzo’s Website of the Day article.
- Digital Storytelling with AI Created Images »
Use
Adobe Firefly to create five still images that tell a digital story. Text-to-Image provides students
with the ability to use a text description to create an image. Provide an example
description: “a five-year-old girl stands at a bus stop with her grandmother as a
yellow bus pulls up at the curve as an impressionist painting.” This assignment would
be like any digital storytelling project with the enhancement of conversation about
digital images created by AI.
- Engage Students with Journal Articles »
Students can copy sections of journal articles and paste them into ChatGPT with sample
prompts to summarize, explain, organize, and identify key information. They can then
compare their own analysis of the same text. They will be able to compare and contrast
their analysis with that of ChatGPT. What similar concepts were found? What additional
ideas were generated based on the output from ChatGPT? What misconceptions or untruths
were in the ChatGPT content?
