What is a Digital Badge?
A digital badge is an image which is a verified, online credential that showcases your skills, achievements, or competencies. It includes metadata that provides details about the issuing organization, criteria for earning the badge, verification that you have earned it, and the date it was earned.
Benefits of Earning Badges
Digital badges demonstrate skills and achievements beyond grades or transcripts. These verified credentials enhance your employability, boost your digital presence, and can be added to LinkedIn profiles, resumes and e-portfolios to showcase your qualifications.
Who Can Earn Badges
Students can earn badges for academic achievements, leadership, internships, and extracurricular activities. Faculty and staff receive badges for faculty development, technology training, and workplace skills. Student clubs and organizations can award badges for peer mentorship, tutoring, or leadership roles. Campus partners such as Career Services, Human Resources, and IT may also create and issue badges.
Once you begin earning badges, you can log in to track your progress, view your credentials, and share them on LinkedIn or your digital portfolio.

Difference Between Badges and Microcredentials
Digital badges typically represent a single, verified skill or achievement gained through training, experience, or demonstrated competency. For example, a Peer Educator Badge could be awarded to students who complete a three-day training course offered by the Dean of Students Office.
Microcredentials, on the other hand, are more comprehensive. They often require the completion of multiple badges, participation in workshops, submission of assignments, and a final assessment or capstone project. For instance, a Leadership Microcredential might involve earning individual badges for public speaking, conflict resolution, and team management—plus attending leadership development workshops and submitting a final reflection or project.
