Inside 3D Printing in the Innovation Hub Maker Studio

Stephen A. SmithA 3D-printed bust of Stephen A. Smith, presented during his March 2026 visit, highlighted the creative and technical capabilities of Seton Hall's new Innovation Hub Maker Studio. The bust later appeared on his ESPN show First Take, where Smith reacted with humor and appreciation, saying, “They love me, they really, really love me,” and adding, “It brings a tear to my eye.”

Developed through a collaboration between Daniel Ladik, Ph.D., associate professor of marketing in the Stillman School of Business and the Teaching, Learning and Technology Center (TLTC), the project showcased the Innovation Hub as a space where creativity, technology and hands-on making come together to bring ideas to life. What began as concept development quickly moved into prototyping, as the team worked through multiple iterations to refine the design, improving detail, scale and structural integrity along the way. After approximately four prototypes, the final version captured Smith’s likeness with precision.

“It was great to work with Renee Cicchino and Scott Bergenfeld as they helped me brainstorm,” said Ladik. “It was not only a gift to Stephen A., but a way to showcase the University on national television.”

Designed to make emerging technologies accessible, the Maker Studio enables students, faculty and staff to build problem-solving, critical-thinking and design skills as they move ideas from concept to creation. 3D printing plays a central role in this hands-on learning, supporting both creative exploration and practical application, alongside other tools such as laser engravers and other fabrication equipment.
