The Center for Catholic Studies recently hosted a Kata Holos Faculty Lunch in the University Center Faculty Lounge featuring Kelly Shea, Ph.D., Associate Professor of English and Director of First-Year Writing at Seton Hall University.

Focused on the theme “Teaching for Wholeness,” the gathering invited faculty to reflect on vocation, authenticity and the integration of intellectual, personal and spiritual life. In conversation with Patrick R Manning, Ph.D., Shea shared reflections on the challenge of pursuing wholeness amid the demands of academic and professional life and on the importance of remaining grounded in clear priorities.

The luncheon offered faculty a meaningful opportunity for dialogue in the spirit of the Catholic Intellectual Tradition. Participants were encouraged to consider teaching not only as the communication of knowledge but also as a formative practice that can foster integrity, joy and human flourishing.

Reflecting on the event,  Shea said, “It was an honor to slow down and sit and chat with Manning about how I aim for achieving wholeness in my life. It is always a delicate balance, but I hope that, if the participants took anything from the conversation, it would be that you have to be very clear on your priorities and ensure that they drive everything you do.” She added, “Additionally, it’s important to find a morsel of joy every day — in beauty, in happiness, in humor, in movement and in love.”

The conversation highlighted the Center for Catholic Studies’ ongoing commitment to fostering interdisciplinary dialogue and faculty formation through programs that engage enduring questions of meaning, vocation and the common good.

Through the Kata Holos Faculty Lunch series, the Center continues to create space for thoughtful exchange and shared reflection among faculty across the University community.
