Starting Tuesday, September 21, the Core will once again offer tutoring in the Core Center (Mooney 339) by faculty tutors. We had begun to offer in person tutoring before the pandemic but had to put that on hold for a while. However, we are able to open the doors to students for help on the content of their Core texts from experienced faculty. This tutoring is not meant to replace the writing help offered by the Writing Center, but to supplement it, as the focus will not be on writing but the authors and readings of both Core I and Core II.

Our tutors are Dr. Todd Stockdale, Core Fellow and former Coordinator of Core I, and Sister/Dr. Mary John Bosco Amakwe, who has been teaching Core I and II for several years. Both are extremely dedicated and caring teachers.

Dr. Stockdale is a teaching fellow in the Department of the Core and served as the curriculum coordinator for Journey of Transformation from 2017-21. He is co-author of the book Making Connections: Exploring Methodist Deacons' Perspectives on Contemporary Diaconal Ministry and teaches in the Diaconal Formation program for the Diocese of Newark (The Episcopal Church). He also has articles and reviews published in journals such as Theology and Ministry, Practical Theology, and the International Journal of Public Theology. When we offered a day of tutoring several years ago to students, calling it "Help for the Journey," Dr. Stockdale was one of the faculty participants. He was extremely enthusiastic about being able to help students beyond those in the classes he was teaching. He said there was a certain freedom in helping students when they are not looking to him for a grade, but simply for help in understanding the material.

Dr. Mary John Bosco E Amakwe (Sister Bosco) is a member of the Congregation of the Holy Family. She lived in Rome for ten years and earned her Ph.D. in Communication/Sociology from the Pontifical Gregorian University, an MA in Communication from Pontifical Salesian University, and a BA in Missionary Spirituality from Pontifical Urban University. In 2017 she earned another MA in Post-Conflict State Reconstruction and a Graduate Certificate in the Studies of United Nations from Seton Hall School of Diplomacy and International Relations. She joined the Seton Hall community in 2008 to teach Oral Com. in the Department of Communication and the Arts till 2018. In the academic year of 2018/2019, she taught CORE I – Journey of Transformation and later moved over to CORE II – Christianity and Culture in Dialogue, which she continues to teach. She is one of the most enthusiastic professors we have teaching in the Core, and students often ask to be signed into her classes.

Tutoring will be offered, to start, on these days and times:

  • Tuesday, 9 a.m. – 12 p.m. with Dr. Stockdale
  • Wednesday, 1-5 p.m. with Sister Bosco
  • Thursday, 9 a.m. – 1 p.m. with Sister Bosco

Drop-ins are welcome. If we find the need for more hours, we may be able to expand the tutoring to other days and times. Since Mooney is not accessible except by stairs, we will make arrangements if a student cannot come up to the Core Center. Please contact Dr. Nancy Enright, Director of the Core or Prof. Maribel Landrau, Assistant Director of the Core, and we will help to work out arrangements with one of the faculty tutors.

We look forward to helping students enjoy the excitement of their Core I and Core II classes by giving them some expert help along the way.
