Inside the Core this coming week, on Wednesday, September 29 at 4 p.m., we are very pleased to host our first presentation in the second year of the annual Scholars Forum in the Catholic Intellectual Tradition series. We began last year in September of 2020 and had nine presentations over the 20-21 academic year. This first presentation for fall 2021 will be by Dr. David Opderbeck of the Law School on his new book, The End of the Law? Law, Theology, and Neuroscience (Cascade Books, Veritas series, August 2021).

The book deals with questions extremely important to the Catholic Intellectual Tradition in connection with ethics and law. As the book description says, Dr. Opderbeck's text addresses these questions: "Does neuroscience show that all our ideas about law and ethics are false? David Opderbeck answers this question with a broad and deep survey of the relationship between theology, science, and ethics. He proposes that Christian theology, which narrates the humanity and divinity of Christ, in conversation with the new Aristotelianism in the philosophy of science, provides a path through secular and religious fundamentalisms alike." His presentation, followed by Q and A, should provide a rich and interesting discussion.

David Opderbeck is Professor of Law and Co-Director of the Center of Technology Law and Policy at Seton Hall University Law School. He teaches Constitutional Law and a variety of courses in the law and technology field. His legal scholarship focuses on technology law and policy, including privacy, cybersecurity, antitrust, and intellectual property law. In addition to his legal training, Dr. Opderbeck earned M.A.T. and Ph.D. degrees in theology and writes and teaches in subjects relating to political theology and theological ethics.
