Scholars' Forum in the Catholic Intellectual Tradition Hosts Dr. Greg Floyd

Inside the Core, we are pleased to host another virtual presentation in the Scholars' Forum in the Catholic Intellectual Tradition. The Scholars' Forum in the Catholic Intellectual Tradition consists of faculty talking about their recently published or soon-to-be published books. It takes place online, usually every other week, on Wednesday, at 4 p.m. It is co-sponsored by the University Core, the Catholic Studies Program, the Catholic Studies Center, the Department of Religion, and Immaculate Conception Seminary School of Theology. Presenters this spring have been Dr. Ines Murzaku and Dr. Maria Morrow.

On Wednesday, March 10, at 4 p.m., the eighth event in the series will be given by Dr. Greg Floyd, Core Fellow and Director of the Catholic Studies Center, as well as serving as editor of The Lonergan Review. He has also taught in the departments of Catholic studies and philosophy. He will be presenting on his recently published book, March 10, Wed., 4 p.m. Dr. Gregory Floyd, The Catholic Reception of Continental Philosophy in North America, which he co-edited with Stephanie Rumpza (University of Toronto Press, 2020).

The book has already been well-received by scholars, such as Randall Rosenberg, of the Department of Theological Studies, Saint Louis University, who says, "The Catholic Reception of Continental Philosophy in North America features remarkable scholarship, and an impressive list of prominent and thoughtful scholars, who are arguably the most seasoned and prolific authors in their areas within the Catholic intellectual tradition." Dr. Floyd says: "This book recounts the somewhat unlikely story of the influence of European philosophy on American Catholic higher education in the twentieth century. The effects of that influence are clear and written across the university, but its history, as well as its philosophical and theological significance, are written here for the first time."

Dr. Floyd holds a Ph.D. in philosophy from Boston College, master's degrees from both Boston College and Notre Dame University, and a bachelor's degree from Notre Dame. He has published articles in the fields of philosophy and theology, written numerous book reviews, and made multiple presentations at conferences in the field. An active scholar, Dr. Floyd also takes time for his students, being an engaged and very well-liked teacher.
