University Core Hosts Events on The Catholic Intellectual Tradition - Seton Hall University

Saint Elizabeth Ann SetonInside the Core this week, we have a wonderful array of programs. After an amazing talk by Bryan Stevenson on Sunday evening, when he received an honorary doctorate from SHU, we are all inspired and excited to move on in the direction toward which he pointed – justice, mercy, and truthful reconciliation. As Mr. Stevenson said, we must face the evils of the past and present in order to experience true and meaningful peace in our country, and faith, as he pointed out, should help us to do that. He noted how people of faith are ideally poised to deal with facing the evils of the past because faith teaches us to bring our sins (individually and as a country) to God in repentance and then move on toward them in redemptive acts involving reconciliation and reparation. It is not possible, in the church or in society, to move onto redemption without confession and repentance.

After this powerful event on Sunday, on Tuesday, the Brownson debate team presents "Dante and the Good Life: Dante Reinterpreted," where students from COAR give renditions of passages from Dante’s Divine Comedy, taken from the excerpts we cover in Core I: Journey of Transformation (5-6:15 p.m., Schwartz Hall, room 06). This top-ranking team is under the direction of Prof. Catherine Zizik and coached by Prof. Sam Ohrenberger Hopkins. This event is part of our Dante series, co-sponsored by the Catholic Studies Program, the Catholic Studies Center, the College of Communication and the Arts, Immaculate Conception Seminary School of Theology, University Libraries, Special Collections, and the University Core Curriculum.
