Seton Hall University welcomed Casey Schreiner for an engaging discussion on the importance
of agility. Schreiner is not only a Los Angeles Times bestselling author, he was nominated for two Emmys and won two Webbys. His programs
won Guinness World Records, and he was awarded a Certificate of Recognition from the
United States Congress. Schreiner shared his unpredictable journey from television
production to becoming a leading voice in outdoor advocacy and much more.
Students had the opportunity to delve deeper into Schreiner's writing process and his approach to balancing multiple careers from TV/Film to author to speechwriter to corporate copywriter. He emphasized the importance of perseverance and adaptability in both writing and television production. He shared that building trust, effective communication, balancing confidence and humility, as well as continuing to put your head down and do the work have been the keys to his success as a leader in the entertainment industry.
Schreiner advised students to maintain a playful spirit, being open to trying new things, not taking oneself too seriously. He warned students not to be precious about their writing. He encouraged students to take improv or other performance related opportunities. He shared the impact of challenging himself, a proclaimed introvert, through performance, and the importance of being able to receive and give notes or feedback. He also shared that these experiences helped him to build community. He emphasized the importance of networking and having a strong support network during challenges.
Schreiner's presentation emphasized the importance of having hobbies outside of your career for your mental health. He highlighted how he became an outdoor enthusiast as an outlet for stress relief while working in the TV industry in LA. There was little hiking information available on the region at the time, so his amateur blog, Modern Hiker, where he shared his passion for exploring and documenting hiking trails in Southern California, evolved from a personal blog to a widely recognized platform, influencing both local and national conversations about outdoor issues.
His advice to aspiring writers and producers included exploring diverse mediums and staying committed to their passions.
