Seton Hall Supports Prevention Links' 26th Annual Red Ribbon Day

SSWA group photo. On Oct. 12, 2024, Prevention Links, a private nonprofit organization and leading advocate for substance abuse prevention, celebrated the 26th annual Red Ribbon Day in Cranford, NJ. The day included a 2-mile walk along Nomahegan Park, uniting community members, businesses and nonprofits to raise awareness and support for substance abuse prevention, treatment and recovery. Funds raised through this event support Prevention Links' ongoing efforts to provide free community programs aimed at combating drug abuse.

The Red Ribbon Campaign is a national initiative promoting awareness and prevention of substance abuse, inspired by the tragic murder of DEA agent Enrique Camarena. It encourages communities to engage in drug prevention activities and foster a commitment to living drug-free through events like National Red Ribbon Week, partnering with local and national organizations to expand its impact.

The College of Arts and Sciences was one of this year's sponsors. In addition to financial support, Seton Hall’s BSW Student Social Work Association (SSWA) and students from the university core volunteered. Erick Morey, a Seton Hall social work student and volunteer, said, “It’s really nice to see the community come together and see families bond.”

SSWA supports the mission of preventing substance abuse disorders by engaging in community outreach and providing mental health resources. They host educational events and workshops to raise awareness about the risks associated with substance use while offering information on mental health support. The SSWA team raised $500 this year, consistent with recent years' fundraising efforts. These initiatives foster community spirit and fund wellness programs, creating an environment that reduces stigma around mental health and substance use.

Mary Landriau, senior faculty associate in the social work department, and Shelia Riley, assistant dean of finance and business administration, facilitated students’ participation at this event.

Prevention Links CEO Morgan Thompson said, “Your energy and commitment helped make this day a vibrant symbol of unity and support for substance use prevention, recovery, mental health and healthier communities.”
