A Transformative Leader

A native of the Republic of Korea, Ban Ki-moon became the eighth Secretary-General of the United Nations on January 1, 2007, succeeding Kofi Annan. He has brought to his post 37 years of service both in government and on the global stage. Prior to his term, he served as foreign minister and played a leading role in bringing about a landmark agreement aimed at promoting peace and stability on the Korean peninsula. He has managed a number of hurdles which include nuclear issues, the crisis in the Darfur region of Sudan, and difficulties in the Middle East.

As Chef de Cabinet during the Republic of Korea's presidency of the General Assembly, Mr. Ban participated in the speedy adoption of the first resolution of the session, condemning the terrorist attacks of September 11th.
