Guest and Visitation Policy
Purpose
The Guest and Visitation Policy allows for residents and visitors to interact in the Seton Hall residential community, while proving parameters to help promote a safe living environment that is conducive to student learning. The Guest and Visitation Policy applies to all Seton Hall University residents and their guests.

Definitions
Resident: Seton Hall student who has signed housing license agreement and is assigned to a specific room in a residence hall. The Resident is also considered the Host for the Guest.
Guest: Any person, including Seton Hall students from other residence halls, seeking to visit a Resident. All Guests must be at least 16 years of age.
Overnight Guest: Any person, including Seton Hall students from other residence halls, who has been approved for an overnight visit with a Resident. Overnight Guests must be the same sex as their Host and must be at least 16 years of age.
Valid ID: A government issued ID that includes birthdate and current photo (i.e., driver’s license, military ID, DMV identification). A college ID that includes birthdate and photo is acceptable. SHU students must present their SHU ID cards. Copies of valid IDs are not accepted.
Policy
The University’s Guest and Visitation Policy is designed to allow for visitors while maintaining security of the Residence Halls and the privacy of individual Residents and Roommates.
All Residents should discuss with their roommates their expectations concerning guests and visitors and develop mutual agreement concerning the number of visitors, the length and time of visits, etc. Resident Assistants are available to assist in developing these agreements.
Violation or misuse of the Guest and Visitation Policy is a violation of the Student Code of Conduct and will result in disciplinary sanction which may include but not be limited to the loss of visitation privileges, probation, and/or suspension/expulsion from residence.
Guest Policy
Guest must be signed in at the Main Desk of the Residence Hall during Visitation Hours by their Resident Host. The Guest must provide and leave Valid ID at the Desk until they leave.
Number of Guests - Each Resident is limited to a maximum of 2 guests at one time.
Visitation Hours for Guests:
Sunday – Thursday – 9 a.m. – 11:59 p.m.
Friday – Saturday – 9 – 2 a.m.
Guests must be escorted by their Resident Host at all times.
The use of opposite-Gender bathroom and shower areas by Guests is not permitted.
Guests must be signed out of the Residence Hall by their Resident Host at the end of the visit. Guests who are not signed out by the Host are in violation of this policy, resulting in Student Conduct referral for the Guest (if a SHU student) and for the Resident Host.
Both Resident Hosts and Guests are responsible for their actions at all times and subject to the Student Code of Conduct and all associated University policies and procedures.
The University reserves the right to limit times during the semester and/or calendar year when no Guests are permitted or when Visitation hours are altered.
Overnight Guest Policy
Resident Hosts must register and receive approval for an Overnight Guest at least 48 hours prior to the arrival/visit of the Overnight Guest.
Each Resident Host is limited to one Overnight Guest at a time and must be of same Gender as Resident Host.
Overnight Guests are limited in duration to two consecutive nights.
The University reserves the right to limit times during the semester and/or calendar year when no Overnight Guests are permitted.
Overnight Guests are permitted –
- Friday and Saturday nights in Boland and Aquinas Hall
- Sunday through Saturday nights in all other Halls
Each Resident is limited to –
- 10 overnight visits per semester for Residents of Boland and Aquinas Halls
- 20 overnight visits per semester for Residents of all other Halls
