Professional Leadership:

1.      Co-convener of the Perils and Possibilities of Diversity in Education Initiative (aligned with the Center for the Study of Genocide and Human Rights at Rutgers University). Project involves working with an international community of teachers and students (k-university); artists, activists, and other professionals. At regular Roundtables we discuss how diversity is addressed in various countries and settings, sharing ideas, and working on collaborative projects. Through this initiative guests from around the world have taught lessons and discussed their work at Seton Hall in person and virtually. Students at Seton Hall, Rutgers, and a Newark high school have had articles published in The Humanist (a CGHR publication). Projects with colleagues from Colombia, Israel, Spain, Nigeria and several New Jersey school districts and organizations are on-going.

2.      I co-founded and remain a co-director of the Center for Global Education at Seton Hall (https://www.shu.edu/global-education/). I served as site director for the grant funded Deliberating in a Democracy Program, working with Street Law and the Constitutional Rights Foundation (Chicago and Los Angeles): http://deliberating.org/. For over fifteen years we’ve worked extensively with the Borys Grinchenko Kyiv University in Ukraine. With a colleague there we established and help edit an electronic journal - The Young Scientists Grinchenko Seton International Journal (https://ysgsij.kubg.edu.ua/index.php/journal/index ). Four editions were published before the Russian invasion of Ukraine. Over 20 Seton Hall students published articles along with Ukrainian students. Each edition of the journal was followed by an international conference hosted by the Ukrainian university where authors shared their work. Clicking on this link brings you to a story about the launch of the e-zine and the first international conference: The session took place on March 31.

3.      I co-founded and currently am a member of the Board of Directors for the New Jersey Center for Civic Education at Rutgers University (https://civiced.rutgers.edu/) . The organization supports teachers and students in exploring the many components of civics. I am part of the curriculum committee working on the middle school civic education curriculum being developed by The Center to meet the new NJ middle school civics curriculum mandate. The high school curriculum development is in process.

4.      I am a founding member of the New Jersey Coalition Against Human Trafficking Education Committee. This link brings you to the Coalition website: https://www.safernj.org/ . As a member of the Education Committee, I have been assisting with the preparation of lesson plans for teachers to use in order to meet the NJ requirement that Human Trafficking be addressed in schools.

5.      I am a founding member of The Collegiate Alliance for Social Education (CASE)-  a statewide network of college professors and other professionals interested in social studies education (2005-present).

I am active in the National Council for the Social Studies (NCSS), the College and University Faculty Assembly (CUFA), the International Assembly (IA), and The Small College and University Faculty Forum (SCUFF).
