General FAQs

• What is Degree Works? »

  Degree Works is a web-based tool for students to monitor their academic progress toward degree completion. It is designed to enhance the academic advising process and is not intended to replace face-to-face meetings with your academic advisor.  

• Who Can Use Degree Works? »

  Degree Works will be available to undergraduate and graduate students on the South Orange and IHS campuses on Monday, October 23, 2023. Access will be granted to faculty, staff, and administrators on these campuses who have advisor status on Monday, October 2, 2023. All users with access can log into Degree Works by navigating to PirateNet and clicking on the Degree Works chiclet. 

• Does Degree Works Replace the Need to Meet with My Academic Advisor? »

  No, Degree Works is not a replacement for academic advising. Degree Works is designed to enhance the academic advisement process by providing your advisor and you with the tools to make informed decisions about your academic plan. Your advisor can also help you access opportunities such as study abroad, research experience, and internship opportunities.   

• How is the Degree Works audit different from my transcript? »

  Your Degree Works audit is a tool to provide you with academic information related to your degree progress. It displays courses required and completed in your degree program. Your transcript is your official college record and provides a chronological list of courses completed and other academic information.

• How do I print a copy of my audit? »

  Press the "Printer" icon in the upper right-hand corner of the Worksheet. 

• Can I register for classes in Degree Works? »

  No. Degree Works is a snapshot of your in-progress courses and your academic history. It should be utilized as a resource in conjunction with the other registration system that you have access to through your Self-Service Banner account. 

• Can I see a list of all the classes I've taken? »

  Yes. There are 3 dots at the top of the Worksheet.  Click the dots and you will see the Class History link where you will find a printable list of courses (with grades) taken at Seton Hall University as well as transfer courses. 

• How current will my information be in Degree Works? »

  The information in Degree Works is refreshed each night. Any changes made today (i.e. grade changes, dropping and adding of classes, course substitutions, etc.) will be seen in Degree Works tomorrow. To see any recent changes, you can press the refresh button under worksheets at the top of the page.

• How do I change the major that is listed for me? »

  Use the request Change in Major/Minor/Concentration option in the Student Dashboard. Note, this has to be approved by the new program so the change will not go into effect immediately. You will receive an email when it is approved or if other action is required on your part.  

• How will my current courses apply if I wish to change my major? »

  If you are considering a change of major, use the “What If” function to generate a hypothetical audit based on your planned change. The “What If” audit will show you coursework that would be required for the new major, courses you have taken that satisfy those requirements, and courses that are still left for you to complete. Consult with your advisor for additional guidance. 

• What do I do if I believe there is an error in my degree audit (i.e. My advisor told me a course I took would be substituted for a requirement)? »

  All curriculum adjustment requests must be initiated by the academic advisor and approved by the appropriate academic officials. Once approved, these requests will be routed to the Office of the Registrar. Processed curriculum adjustments are reflected on the degree audit.

Audit FAQs 

A Degree Works audit is a review of past and current coursework that provides information on completed and outstanding catalog requirements necessary to complete your degree. The audit is divided into block requirements such as Degree, Core, and Major Requirements.

• How do I read my degree audit? »

  Degree Works opens automatically to the Student View of your audit. Your graduation requirements are organized into blocks, based on type (Ex: core curriculum, math and science, leadership curriculum, major, general electives, etc.). Each block works like a checklist with boxes that are automatically checked when a requirement is met. Your advisor can assist you with reading your audit.

• What do the legend symbols mean? »

  	=Complete
  	=Not Complete
  	= Complete except for classes in-progress
  	=Course requires a pre-requisite
  (R)	=Repeated class
  @	= If the @ sign appears with course numbers after it (i.e. @1000:4999), it means that you can take any 1000-4999 level course. If it appears after a subject prefix (i.e. ENGL@), it means you can take any course with that subject prefix.

   

• How does Degree Works decide where to place course that I’ve completed? »
  Degree Works looks at your overall program and places each course using a “best fit” algorithm. Priorities have been programmed so that courses will be used in some areas before they will be used in others. This process will not always be perfect, particularly when multiple possibilities exist. As you complete additional courses, some things may move on the audit in order to better represent your degree progress.
• Why isn’t my transfer work meeting a requirement? »
  There could be two reasons. First, the transfer course was determined not to be an equivalent course. Second, the course did not meet either the minimum number of credits and/or minimum grade requirement for use in your program of study. 
• What is the “In Progress and Preregistered” or “In Progress” Block? »
  The “In Progress and Preregistered” block lists all currently registered courses. 
• What is the “Repeated Coursework and Insufficient Grades” Block? »
  These are courses in which you did not a high enough grade to count towards your degree. It will also include courses you are retaking to increase your grade. When a course taken at Seton Hall is repeated at Seton Hall, only the higher grade is used in the calculation of the undergraduate and graduate level GPA. In this case, the lower grade will remain on the degree audit marked (R) to denote its exclusion from GPA calculation. 
• If I withdraw from a class, will that be reflected in my audit? »
  Yes. Courses from which you have withdrawn will appear in the Repeated Coursework and Insufficient Grades Block on your audit. 
• What is the “Work Not Applicable to Degree” Block? »
  These are courses that will not count toward the number of credits that are needed to complete your degree. These include things like developmental courses or courses taken at another level. 
• Are my grades available in Degree Works? »
  Your degree audit will be updated with your most recent grades the morning after grades have been submitted by your instructor and recorded in Banner. 
• If all the boxes are checked, does that mean I’m graduating? »
  No, you are required to file an online Application for Degree with the Office of the Registrar. A preliminary audit of your coursework and a final audit after all final grades have been submitted will determine your eligibility to graduate. An evaluation notice will be sent to you via email.
• Why is my Degree Block not satisfied? »
  If everything within your Degree Block is checked off, but your Degree Block is not satisfied, there is either a minimum GPA requirement that has not been met, or the overall number of credits required for your degree has not been met. 
• Are there requirements for graduation that Degree Works doesn’t check? »
  While Degree Works has been designed to check almost everything that you must complete to qualify for graduation, there may be additional requirements for your major that must be completed as well. You should use Degree Works in conjunction with the College Catalog and with any information that your advisor provides to ensure that you remain on track for graduation. If you have questions about any additional requirements for your major, talk with an advisor during your next advising session.

"What If" Feature FAQs

• What is the "What If" feature? »

  The "What If" function allows students to see how their previously taken courses would apply to a different major or minor. Be sure to also include a specific concentration if the degree you are inquiring about requires one to be declared.

• If I use the “What If” function does this mean that I have changed my major? »

  No, the “What If” function is for information purposes only. You will see the header “What If Audit” displayed at the top of the audit whenever an audit is run on a “What If” scenario. To officially change your major, use the Request Change in Major/Minor/Concentration option in the Student Dashboard. Note, this must be approved by the new program so the change will not go into effect immediately. You will receive an email when it is approved or if other action is required on your part. 

• Can I save a “What if” scenario? »
  No, “What If” plans are not saved on Degree Works. You would need to run a new “What If” scenario the next time you log in to see it again. 
• Can my advisor see my "What If" scenario? »
  Since "What If" scenarios are not stored on Degree Works, your advisor can only see your results if the two of you work through a "What If" scenario together.
• Can I view multiple "What If" scenarios on the same screen? »
  Yes, Degree Works will allow you to select multiple majors and minor combinations. Consult your catalog for approved degree/major/minor combinations.
• Why am I receiving an error when I run a "What If" scenario? »
  The "What If" tool requires that you make a selection in all required fields. Failure to do so may result in an error. If you continue to have difficulty, reach out to your advisor for help.
• What does the Future Classes feature do? »
  The future classes feature allows students to see how future courses would fit into their degree major, minor, or concentration. Degree Works lets you input projected courses, which will appear on your worksheet as Planned Term courses, enabling you to see how these courses will fulfill requirements in your degree. 

GPA Calculator FAQ

• What does the Term GPA Calculator show? »

  The Term GPA Calculator will show your estimated cumulative GPA after filling in hypothetical grade information. By entering anticipated grades for current courses, you will see a revised cumulative GPA based on the estimates provided. 

• Where can I find my major GPA? »

  Your major GPA is a calculated GPA based on coursework used to fulfill major requirements. This GPA appears within the major block of your audit. 

• Is this calculated GPA in Term Calculator guaranteed? »
  No. This is an estimate only.
