Empowering our Campus: Free Self-Defense Course

Woman in a defensive stance. The Division of Student Services is offering free Rape Aggression Defense (R.A.D.) training to members of the University community on October 26 and 27, 2024. The R.A.D. Systems is the national standard in self-defense instruction that uses martial arts as a practical means of defense against an assailant in various circumstances.

R.A.D. Systems provide specially designed educational opportunities that address specific needs for women, men, children and seniors to create a safer future for themselves. According to the National Institute of Justice and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, one out of every six American women has been the victim of an attempted or completed rape in her lifetime.

That’s why R.A.D. Systems developed the R.A.D. for Women course, a self-defense program designed to empower women by educating them about risk awareness, risk recognition and risk reduction. To date, it has been taught to over 900,000 women in colleges, universities and civic programs across North America. Men’s courses, R.A.D. for Men, among other self-defense courses, are currently being explored for the future.

Upon completion, participants will be eligible to practice in any R.A.D. program, anywhere in the country, free for life. The class takes place over two days and is considered one training session with three parts. Participants are required to attend both days to complete the program.

Part One consists of a presentation on the history and foundation of R.A.D. principles. Part Two is a training section where the moves are learned and practiced, and Part Three is an optional simulation. The optional third section on the second date is a simulated full-contact exercise where participants will use R.A.D. techniques and strategies on specially trained instructors.

We are currently accepting trainees for the upcoming class, which will be held over two sessions on the specified dates.

Saturday, October 26, 2023 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Sunday, October 27, 2023 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Registration is required. To register for the course, please fill out this form.

Both sessions will be held in Bethany A.
