Inside the Core we are happy to host our last Scholars’ Forum in the Catholic Intellectual Tradition for the spring of 2025 with Ellen Scully, Ph.D., from Immaculate Conception Seminary School of Theology. Ellen Scully has presented for us before in the Scholars’ Forum and we are thrilled to welcome her back to discuss her new book, Human Salvation in Early Christianity: Exploring the Theology of Physicalist Soteriology (Cambridge University Press, 2025).

A brief description of the book, sent by the author, follows:

Some of the greatest early Christian theologians taught that because all of humanity fell in Adam, the incarnation of Christ (who is the second Adam), must also have a universal effect independent of individual belief or consent.

Ellen Scully outlines this “physicalist” logic in which all humans, not just believers, benefit from the incarnation and. in unraveling the mystery of its fifth-century disappearance from Christian thought, reveals theological ways to combat the overwhelming individualism of the present day.

A specialist in how the early church, particularly in the fourth to fifth century, understood salvation as well as other areas of patristics and theology, Ellen Scully is always extremely interesting to hear. She will be introduced by her husband, Jason Scully, Ph.D., core fellow.
(Click here for more info on her book).

The event will be held from 4-5 p.m., April 15. Click here to join on Teams.
