Take Part in the Laudato Si’ Sustainability Challenge

EarthOften in the news, the climate crisis seems to be growing. Whether through the United Nations, the Catholic Church, global summits, or myriad other groups and initiatives, people of good will across the globe are taking the climate crisis seriously.

Whether you are already combatting climate change or are hoping to find new ways to care for the earth, we invite you to take part in our campus-wide Laudato Si’ Sustainability Challenge! Please add to our efforts and help the Seton Hall community make a bigger impact!

What to do in two steps

First Take Action:
There are many things that we can do to help the earth, and this challenge identifies over a dozen that we can focus on as a community to help reduce our carbon footprint in ways that can be relatively easy and not too time-consuming. We are inviting all Seton Hall students and employees to take these actions for the rest of the academic year:

  • Recycle
  • Carpool or rideshare
  • Take public transit
  • Walk or use a bike
  • Shorten showers (4 mins or less)
  • Eat more plants
  • Use cold water to wash laundry (when possible)
  • Donate or shop at thrift stores
  • Purchase high-quality clothing that will last (avoid fast fashion)
  • Use refillable water bottles and mugs (avoid single-use containers)
  • Unplug unnecessary appliances when not in use (reduce “phantom power” energy use)
  • Use LED bulbs
  • Volunteer to care for the earth
  • Connect with nature
  • Invite friends to care for the earth with you
  • Any other activities that care for the earth (plant a tree, purchase carbon offsets when flying etc.)

Second, Log Your Action(s) Here.
After you take any of these actions, be sure to log it on our webform, where you can also learn more about these actions. Logging your contribution allows us to measure our collective impact as a community here at Seton Hall. Feel free to complete the form each time you take an action like recycling a bottle or taking public transit or fill it out once a day or once a week. Whatever works for you! We invite you to save the link on your phone or computer so that it’s always hand.

Who Should Participate?
You! Whether you are a Seton Hall student, receive a paycheck from the University, or are part of the Seton Hall community in some other way, please join in the Laudato Si’ Sustainability Challenge today!

Why Now?
This marks the ten year anniversary of Laudato Si’, Pope Francis’s landmark encyclical in which he challenged the world to do more to care for the earth and its people. With an inspiring message, Laudato Si’ has prompted millions to take action to care for our common home. Seton Hall is honoring Laudato Si’ in many ways and this challenge is but one effort, part of a Mission Partners Program project with Josephine DeVito and Thomas Seat. Also, when it comes to helping the earth, any time is a good time. Please do your part and help make this year’s Laudato Si’ Sustainability Challenge at Seton Hall a success!

Moving Forward
The challenge starts now, but are you interested in learning more? Then please feel free to join us on Monday, November. 10, 2:30–3:30 p.m. in the University Center’s Event Lounge to learn more about the climate crisis, Laudato Si’ and the campuswide Laudato Si’ Sustainability Challenge!
