The Lonergan Review is the journal of the Bernard J. Lonergan Institute at Seton Hall University. Its mission is to link the thought of Bernard Lonergan, particularly his account of explicit self-knowledge and generalized empirical method, with a variety of academic and professional disciplines of study. In doing so, it seeks to foster authentic human cultures of high ideals, open to religion, the Catholic intellectual tradition, and service of the poor.

Functionally Specialized Articles

Interpretive Studies: Articles that exposit what Lonergan meant by what he said or wrote, either by putting elements of his oeuvre in contact with one another, or by analogy or comparison with the work of cognate thinkers.

Historical Studies: Articles that place Lonergan’s work in historical context, explore his sources and influence, and/or explore the influence of his work on and interaction with other scholars, philosophical traditions, or intellectual movements.

Dialectical Studies: Articles that use Lonergan’s work to identify what Lonergan called “positional” or “counter-positional” elements in a thinker’s work or in an existing scholarly debate. These articles should endeavor to advance that which is positional or reverse that which is counter-positional. Articles which put a premium on advancing what is already positional will be given special consideration.

Foundational Studies: Articles that use Lonergan’s work to set out properly-basic methodical operations and categories either in theoretical terms or through phenomenological description of their basis in what Lonergan called “interiority.”

Doctrinal Studies: Articles that articulate a “state of the question” on some point either by using Lonergan’s work or by relating the topic to Lonergan’s work or its application and significance. These may establish their judgment on the basis of a review of the literature, by marshalling and weighing existing evidence, or any other properly critical and reflective technique.

Systematic Studies: Articles that us Longergan’s work to identify some point of apparent conflict or incoherence between presently-settled scholarly judgments

Interdisciplinary Research

Submissions that demonstrate the application of Lonergan's ideas across different academic fields such as sociology, education, theology, philosophy, economics, and environmental studies.

Case Studies in Professional Practice

Articles presenting case studies from various professions (e.g., law, medicine, business, social work) that apply Lonergan’s concepts to professional theory or practice.

Cultural and Ethical Analysis

Articles examining how Lonergan’s ideas can contribute to the cultivation of authentic human cultures, with a focus on high ideals, openness to religion, and commitment to serving the poor.

Reviews and Critiques

Critical reviews of recent books, articles, or other scholarly works that engage with Lonergan’s philosophy, as well as critiques that may propose developments, revisions, or challenges to his ideas.
