Wednesday, August 26, 2020
Dr. Kathleen Nagle reflects on "Transformation and Mission: Educating the Whole Person" in the first of four retreats for faculty and administrators of all faiths.
The "Heart of the University" Retreat Series gives faculty and administrators of all faiths the opportunity for input and guided reflection. The series is co-sponsored by the Office of Mission and Ministry, and the Center for Vocation and Servant Leadership.
The first retreat, given by Dr. Kathleen Nagle on the theme of "Transformation and Mission: Educating the Whole Person" will be held from 9:00 to 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, September 16, 2020, via Microsoft Teams.
If we were to condense the mission of Seton Hall University into a phrase, it might be "to educate the whole person." Our aim is to help students expand their horizons beyond their current knowledge and interests, beyond what is in it for them. How direct should we be in attempting to cultivate self-transcendence among our students? Is self-transcendence a realistic goal for college students? At this retreat we will consider how our pedagogy can facilitate religious, moral and intellectual development in our students.
Kathleen F. Nagle, PhD, is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Speech-Language Pathology. As a GEM Fellow, she is particularly interested in applying Lonergan's transcendental precepts to instruction and clinical practice.
