Jonathan Heaps, Ph.D.
The Heart of the University Retreat Series gives faculty and administrators of all faiths the opportunity for input and guided reflection. The series is co-sponsored by the Office of Mission and Ministry, and the Center for Vocation and Servant Leadership.
The fourth retreat, given by Jonathan Heaps, Ph.D., on the theme of Mission Integration and Self-Transcendence: Desire, Willingness and Grace, will be held on Tuesday, April 1, 2025, from 9:00 to 11:00 a.m. in the Chancellor’s Suite and via Microsoft Teams.
All learning is self-transcendence. It begins in the luminosity of consciousness and tends towards living in reality on reality’s terms. That tending is driven by a desire to know the truth and do what is good, without limit or exception. But that desire can be stifled, ignored, drowned out or distorted in myriad ways. It needs to be matched by willingness to follow where that desire leads. We will discuss how a university’s mission can add to or detract from that willingness and the role that God’s help may play in each of us contributing to that authenticity.
Jonathan Heaps, Ph.D., is the Director of the Bernard J. Lonergan Institute and teaches in the Department of the Core. His book, The Ambiguity of Being: Lonergan and the Problems of the Supernatural, appeared with Catholic University of America Press in 2024.
