Health and Safety Inspections

Purpose

To increase the safety of the entire community, all residence halls rooms/apartments will be inspected to ensure health and safety compliance.

Scope

University Policy

Definitions

This is a university policy, enforced by Residence Life staff and applies to all individuals residing in university-owned residence halls/apartments.

Policy

To maintain a safe and healthy living environment, members of our residential community must adhere to the Fire Safety policy and maintain a reasonably clean living space.

To ensure compliance, announced and unannounced Health and Safety Inspections of residence hall rooms, apartments, and suites will occur several times throughout the year.

The procedures related to the policy are as follows:

  • Residence Life staff will enter each room and inspect for health and safety compliance. Residents do not need to be present during this time.
  • Rooms will be inspected for fire safety violations and a reasonable degree of cleanliness.
  • If a room is deemed not to be compliant with the fire safety policy or prohibited actions/items are found, residents will receive an electronic notification alerting them of the violation observed.
  • When violations involved a prohibited action (i.e. placing a tapestry on the wall), residents will be instructed by staff to correct the action. Students will have 48 hours to remedy the action prior to reinspection.
  • When violations involve prohibited items (i.e. prohibited appliances) those items will be removed by Residence Life staff. Students will have the opportunity to retrieve their prohibited item to bring directly home. All prohibited items not claimed by students will be discarded at the end of each semester.
  • Students will be referred to the Office of Student Conduct when prohibited items are found, prohibited actions are not remedied in a timely manner, other violations of the Student Code of Conduct are discovered, and/or students repeatedly fail to comply with health and safety guidelines.
