Seton Hall to Host Lifeguard Certification Course Open to Campus and Community

lifeguardSeton Hall University will host a lifeguarding certification course in partnership with the American Red Cross from June 15-18, providing students and members of the local community with the opportunity to gain essential lifesaving skills.

Offered on campus, the course will follow a blended format that combines online instruction with in-person training. Participants will learn water rescue techniques, CPR/AED and first aid, and will be required to complete a series of practical assessments. Those who successfully complete the program will earn a nationally recognized certification, preparing them to respond effectively in aquatic emergencies.

A key aspect of the course is its accessibility beyond the University. By opening enrollment to the public, Seton Hall will help meet the growing demand for certified lifeguards while expanding opportunities for community members to engage with the campus.

"Our goal is to make opportunities like this accessible not only to our students but also to members of the local community,” said Ghana Hylton, director of Campus Inclusion and Business Affairs. “This course not only prepares participants for certification but also builds the confidence and skills needed to respond in critical situations."

The instructor leading the course emphasized the real-world impact of the training. “Lifeguarding is about more than learning techniques — it’s about developing the awareness and confidence to act when it matters most,” Benjamin Mitchell said. “Participants leave this course having the knowledge and leadership for water safety and medical emergencies.”

In addition to certification, the program offers a pathway to employment in aquatics and recreation settings. More broadly, it reinforces the importance of preparedness, responsibility and the ability to act quickly; skills that extend well beyond the pool and into everyday life.
