Who is Generation Z and How Do We Teach Them

Born between 1995 and 2015, Generation Z brings its own unique needs and expectations to the higher education campus. In these interactive sessions, co-facilitated by Dr. Renee Robinson and the Teaching, Learning and Technology Center, participants will learn about the students known as Generation Z and will learn about the preferences of Gen Z, including social media, their likes and dislikes, and how they have been affected by the pandemic.
The first workshop, Who is Generation Z and How Do We Teach Them? will take place on March 15th at 3:00 p.m.. In this interactive session, participants will learn about the students known as Gen Z. Born between 1995 and 2015, Generation Z brings its own unique needs and expectations to the higher education campus. After this workshop, participants will be able to:
- Identify at least four characteristics of Gen Z
- List the historical events that shaped this generation
- Analyze pre-conceived ideas about Gen Z
- Apply new knowledge to create appropriate learning activities for Gen Z
The second workshop, Understanding Gen Z Culture, will take place on March 23rd at 1:00 p.m.. In this interactive session, participants will learn about the preferences of Generation Z, including social media, their likes and dislikes, and how they have been affected by the Pandemic.
All participants will leave the workshop with a better understanding of what motivates Gen Z, several teaching methods that they can immediately implement in their classes, and ideas for some new techniques to use in the future. After this workshop, participants will be able to:
- List at least three characteristics of Gen Z
- Identify best practices for engaging Gen Z in the classroom
- Brainstorm techniques they wish to try in their classroom
Dr. Robinson, the interim Dean of Communication and the Arts and Professor of Communication, just recently published “Communication Instruction in the Generation Z Classroom: Educational Explorations”
