LGBTQ+ Pride Month and Juneteenth Celebrating Freedom
June is Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Queer (LGBTQ+) Pride Month, a time to remember the many achievements and contributions of the LGBTQ+ community. June was chosen to commemorate the 1969 Stonewall Uprising in Manhattan when the police “Public Morals Squad” assaulted people during a raid of gay and lesbian bars. Resistance to the violence grew into large demonstrations for LGBTQ+ rights. This uprising is considered a catalyst for the Gay Liberation Movement and fueled LGBTQ+ activism in the United States. This fall, the Center for Faculty Development will reprise its panel on “What LGBTQ+ Students Want Their Professors to Know.” Stay tuned for details.
June is also Caribbean Heritage Month. This is the first year New Jersey celebrates Juneteenth, June 19th, a day that recognizes the abolition of slavery in Texas in 1865, as a state holiday.
