Federal Work Study
The Federal Work-Study Program (FWS) is maintained by the Office of Student Employment. FWS is a need based federal financial aid program that provides part-time employment for undergraduate students to help with college expenses. Federal Work Study funds are based on limited resources from the Federal Government and are not guaranteed. The program encourages community service work and work related to the recipient's course of study. To check your eligibility for Federal Work Study visit the Office of Student Employment.
- There are two different kinds of work-study: Federal Work-Study (FWS) and Departmental funded Work-Study. In order to qualify for FWS, you must apply for financial aid and show documented financial need by filing the FAFSA. Departmental funded Work-Study is funded by the department in which you are employed and is not counted as a part of your Financial Aid award package. You do not need to demonstrate financial need in order to receive non-Federal or departmental Work-Study.
To check your eligibility for federal work-study the following requirements must be met:
- You must submit the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA)
- Must continue to remain in good academic standing as defined by the Probation Policy published in the University Catalog, which includes maintaining SAP and meeting all conditions for receiving aid.
- Students are required to secure their employment and can work up to 20 hours per week during the academic year (fall and spring semesters) not to exceed a total of 40 hours each pay period. During specific non-academic periods (summer, Christmas, and Spring break) students may work up to 29 hours per week not to exceed a total of 58 hours per period. This schedule is determined by Student Employment.
- Being awarded FWS does not guarantee you a position. Please view the Federal Work Study document for information on how to find a job on campus.
- Your earnings are paid directly to you and are not deducted from your bill. The starting pay rate is currently at $12 per hour depending on the job description.
- Students may only have one position at a time.
