Grants & Discounts

The following is a listing of grant and discount opportunities available to perspective students on a federal, state and institutional level.

Federal Grants

Federal Pell Grant (PELL)

(FAFSA required) Pell Grant offers assistance to high need students working toward their first bachelor's degree. The Pell Grant is funded each year by Congress, which sets the minimum and maximum award amounts. If you are eligible for the Pell Grant, it will be listed on your SHU financial aid award offer. Eligibility is determined by the FAFSA. There is no separate application, and the award will disburse automatically once you are registered. If you are enrolled less than full-time (12 credits) the amount disbursed will be less than the amount listed on your award offer.

Students may be eligible for up to two (2) scheduled awards per year. To receive a second Pell Grant award, in the same award year (consisting of the Fall, Spring and Summer semesters), you must be enrolled at least half-time (6 credit hours). For example, students receiving a Pell grant payment for both the Fall and Spring semesters may be eligible for a second payment during the Summer semester. Eligibility for the second payment will be determined by an aid administrator and can be viewed on the student’s Pirate Net account once calculated.

Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant (SEOG)
(FAFSA required) SEOG is a federal grant available to very high need students working toward their first bachelor's degree. If you are eligible for SEOG it will be listed on your award offer. There is no separate application, and the award will disburse automatically once you are registered. You must be enrolled full-time (12 credits per semester) to receive this grant. This award is not guaranteed and students in the EOP program are given priority.

State Grants

NJ Tuition Aid Grant (TAG)
(FAFSA required) The TAG is a state grant available to NJ residents enrolled full time as an undergraduate at a NJ college or university who demonstrate financial need. Cannot have a prior bachelor’s degree.

NJ Educational Opportunity Fund (EOF) Grant
(FAFSA required) The EOF Grant is a state grant available to NJ residents from educationally and economically disadvantaged backgrounds enrolled at a NJ college or university and admitted to SHU EOF Program.

SHU Grants

SHU Need-Based Grant
(FAFSA required) Students awarded this grant must apply for financial aid every academic year.  The Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) must be processed by January 15 of each year. Funding for this program is not a guarantee each year. Student eligibility status and awards will be reviewed each academic year and depends upon available funding. Students must be enrolled into an eligible undergraduate program of study and in at least 12 credit hours.

SHU Discounts

Religious Discount
The Religious Discount is a 50% available to members of the clergy. The Religious Discount Application must be submitted every year along with a letter from your order verifying eligibility.

Teacher Discount
The Catholic School Teacher discount is available to full-time lay professional educators employed in Roman Catholic dioceses of NJ, including teachers, principals, and central office administrators. Eligible educators would receive up to a 50% tuition reduction for tuition charged for graduate level courses at SHU. To be considered for the discount, students must complete the application and submit to SHU Office of Financial Aid, along with a letter from your principal verifying your employment. The Teacher Discount Application must be submitted every year.
