Thursday, June 20, 2024
Seton Hall University has been selected to participate in the American Association of Colleges and Universities (AAC&U)'s inaugural Institute on AI, Pedagogy, and the Curriculum. This prestigious initiative aims to help academic institutions navigate the challenges and opportunities presented by artificial intelligence (AI) in educational settings.
Beginning in September 2024, the Institute will engage faculty, staff, and administrators from various academic institutions through virtual events, mentorship, and collaboration to develop and implement AI action plans for classrooms, curricula, and campuses. Throughout the 2024-25 academic year, participating teams will define AI initiative goals, develop measurable AI action plans, stay updated on AI innovations and policies, and create evidence-based models for teaching and curriculum development. They will also adopt new approaches to assignments and grading, address ethical issues, and ensure equitable outcomes.
“AI is perhaps the most impactful technology since the broad availability of the World Wide Web in 1993. It presents opportunities to personalize learning and increase efficiency across the entire University in ways that we haven't seen before," said Paul Fisher, chief information officer. "We are excited to have been chosen for the first AAC&U cohort on AI, Pedagogy, and Curriculum to help map Seton Hall’s journey with artificial intelligence.”
Seton Hall's participants have been carefully selected to represent a broad spectrum of the university community. This interdisciplinary group includes faculty and administrators who are actively engaged with students on AI projects and conduct research on AI applications within their disciplines, providing practical insights into potential challenges and solutions. The members are:
- Team Lead and Executive Director of the Teaching, Learning, and Technology Center, Michael Soupios, who oversees faculty development and training to ensure effective AI integration into curricula.
- Professor of Innovation and Leadership, Ruchin Kansal, MBA, who offers expertise in the technical aspects of AI and leadership in technology-driven educational environments.
- Stillman School of Business Professor, Jack Shannon, J.D., who provides insight into AI applications in the corporate world and their impact on business practices.
- College of Human Development, Culture, and Media Professor, Renee Robinson, Ph.D., who focuses her research on AI’s effect on media, information dissemination, and ethical considerations.
- Assistant Vice President for Student Services and Dean of the Center for Academic Success, Vaughn Calhoun, Ed.D., M.P.A., who supports first-year students and ensures AI initiatives aid in student retention and success.
“Our team applied for the AAC&U's Institute to better position ourselves to meet the needs of students, faculty, and administrators in teaching, learning, and technology support services,” stated Michael Soupios. “We see the Institute as an invaluable opportunity to learn alongside other academic institutions and colleagues, shaping the dialogue, research, and practices involving AI.”
By participating in the Institute, Seton Hall aims to gain valuable insights and develop robust strategies to address challenges, fostering an environment where AI enhances educational experiences and outcomes. This proactive approach prepares students for a future where AI and digital competencies are increasingly in demand across all sectors. Seton Hall’s engagement in this initiative ensures its community is well-equipped to navigate and thrive in the rapidly advancing technological landscape, positioning the University at the forefront of transformation in an AI-driven era.
