Our Process

Disability Support Services (DSS) aims to create an inclusive learning environment by assisting with accommodations within the classroom, residence life, fieldwork, and the overall campus community. Once a student completes our Student Application Form and submits documentation of their disability, a student engages in the interactive process with our staff to determine academic barriers and their lived experience to tailor an accommodation plan to the student. Faculty are required to comply with the Americans with Disabilities Act, Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973. Services that are considered a fundamental alternation, such as course modification, will not be considered reasonable under the ADA and Section 504.  

AIM Information

We utilize a system called AIM to keep track of students registered with our office, exam proctoring requests, accommodation letter requests, and more. AIM can be accessed through the Pirate Net chicklet, “Aim Disability Support.”

  • You can see a list of students in your courses with accommodation letters within AIM on your homepage. If there are no students listed, then you have no students with accommodation letters for that semester. Students can submit requests at any point during the semester, so letters can appear throughout the year.  
  • When a student requests an accommodation letter, we will send it to the professor and student directly via AIM, and will be sent to your Seton Hall email. You can also log in to AIM to view an accommodation letter as a PDF.  
  • Accommodation are protected under FERPA as part of the student’s record. Accommodation letters are private and should only be forwarded on a need-to-know basis.

Confidentiality

DSS is able to verify that we are working with a particular student, but we are not permitted to share the nature of a student’s disability. When communicating with a student about their accommodations, it’s important to keep the conversation confidential. If a student with a disability is in your course, you should not reference DSS when speaking with them in front of others.
