McQuaid Medal Recipients To Be Celebrated at Charter Day Event
Thursday, March 18, 2021
During St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Charter Day, an annual opportunity to reflect on Seton Hall's history, Catholic identity and mission, the University will celebrate the recipients of the Bishop Bernard J. McQuaid Medal for Distinguished Service.
This year the McQuaid medal has been awarded to Paul Fisher, M.P.A., Associate CIO & director of the College of Nursing.
Fisher, Fortune and Lothian will be recognized alongside the Stillman School of Business and Stephen Zuchowski, associate director for safety and security systems in the Division of Student Services.
Named for the first president of Seton Hall, who throughout his life was dedicated to Catholic education, this medal recognizes long-serving employees for their exceptional work and for serving with selfless dedication and high distinction.
The 2021 honorees are:
Paul Fisher, M.P.A., Associate CIO & Director of the TLTC
Fisher has served Seton Hall University in the TLTC since 1997 and is responsible
for supporting Seton Hall in the thoughtful use and integration of technology into
the curriculum and across functional business units. Fisher has been a driving force
behind University initiatives with long-term impacts such as outfitting Interprofessional
Health Services with state-of-the-art technology, spearheading the University's Esports
program and facilitating the summer Cybersecurity Bootcamp. Recently, he and his team
retrofitted classrooms with the latest web conferencing technology, trained faculty
and coordinated various academic technology tools and services to support the University's
transition to a HyFlex teaching model in response to the COVID-19 pandemic.
"Paul's leadership and his ability to work through challenges with ease is a true testament to the person he is," a colleague said. "It would be difficult to find a University project or initiative that he has not been involved with, and through these achievements, he has demonstrated his dedication to the success of our faculty, students and to the Seton Hall community."
Juanita Fortune, Payroll Processor/Coordinator of the Payroll Office
Treating everyone she encounters with respect and professionalism, Fortune serves
the University community with her attention to detail and dedication to the different
aspects of the payroll processes. Described as a true Pirate and an unsung frontline
hero, Fortune came to campus daily to perform her essential work: ensuring everyone
on payroll, from student workers to the top executives of the University, were paid
on time.
She exceeds the responsibilities of her role and has personally reminded some employees to submit their timesheet or signature approval. Having served the University Payroll Office for 34 years, Fortune received this award for her selfless dedication to the University.
"The Catholic mission of our University is personified in Fortune who shows patience and caring for all employees. Her deeply rooted faith keeps her loving the commitment she gives to whomever meets her," a colleague said.
Judith Lothian, Ph.D., R.N., FAAN, Graduate Chair and Professor
Lothian is an acknowledged childbirth educator, maternal and child nurse, and advocate
for birthing women with over four decades in the field. In addition to her notable
work done outside of the University, Lothian has advanced the interests of Seton Hall
in multiple capacities including through her time on the Faculty Senate, Faculty Guide
Committee, and numerous academic task forces.
Most recently she has served on the Health Intervention and Communication Team, helping to ensure that the University negotiates the coronavirus pandemic as safely and wisely as possible with the best information available. She has served on the faculty in the College of Nursing since 2000, directed a graduate program, and been a full professor for five years.
"During the leadership transitions, strategic planning, new Intraprofessional Health campus, pandemic and other challenges of the past five years, Lothian has remained passionately invested in extra work on behalf of the University community and mothers alike," a colleague said. "We are a more unified, collaborative, faithful, hard-working and happy University because of Judith Lothian."
Fisher, Fortune and Lothian will be recognized alongside the 2021 Servant Leader Scholars.
